Lauren's Walk - a 'drizzling' success!
Saturday 16th June saw a large group from Crawshaw travel north to take on the Three Peaks Challenge. This annual event has been part of the school calendar for a number of years, but was recently named ‘Lauren’s Walk’ in memory of Lauren Kisby, a former student who succumbed to cancer and whose peers decided to fundraise for the Teenage Cancer Trust charity in memory of their friend.
(Post event de-brief complete with smiles!)
Last year the school raised £2,700 and although counting is not yet complete, the aim this year is to top the £3,000 mark. The 109 students were joined by around 30 staff, friends, family and dogs on a day that was affected severely by terrible weather conditions. After a 6am meet at school, the group set off from Horton-in-Ribblesdale around 7:30am and the severe rainfall, reduced visibility and waterlogged paths did not deter them from continuing with the task ahead.
(Conditions are bleak on Whernside - smiles all round!)
Unfortunately, having tackled Pen-y-Ghent and Whernside, the Police and Mountain Rescue services put an end to the challenge, advising participants from the several organisations who embarked on the walk that day to abandon due to the worsening conditions before attempting the third and final Peak - Ingleborough. This was much to the dismay of everyone who had overcome so much already and who wanted to go on and complete their journey despite being muddy, wet and sore from Peaks 1 and 2. Naturally, safety was the primary consideration and advice was duly followed, which required alternative arrangements to be made swiflty in order to transport everyone back home to warm up and dry off. Thanks to everyone who was involved or who donated / sponsored the staff and students. As ever, it was a hugely positive and well supported event, one which is set to remain central to the school’s fundraising efforts in the future. The staff received numerous comments from other walkers on the day about the attitude and conduct of our students, which was, without exception outstanding.
If you would like to make a donation please do so to the School Finance Office. We will report back the total amount raised as soon as we have a figure.
