Music
At Crawshaw we offer our students a wealth of knowledge on music and the performing arts. We push ourselves to provide a variety of teaching and learning styles, enabling our students to reach their potential. Performing, listening and composing are at the heart of the curriculum. Students at Crawshaw are provided with a number of opportunities to take music beyond the classroom. These extracurricular events take place in the school theatre and are popular amongst both the students and the parents. Crawshaw also benefits from peripatetic teaching staff provided by ArtForms. Students are able to receive lessons on the following instruments: Piano/ keyboard, Brass, Woodwind, Drums, Guitar/ bass guitar.
After school each week the following activities take place: SureNote (band), SureVoice (choir), Senior vocal group. We also run a range of annual events all of which are ticketed events and are listed in the Calendar pages. These include: X-factor, Christmas Cracker, Christmas performances to local , rimary schools, Must be the music competition, Easter concert and Crawshaw's got talent. This year we will also be showing a production of Bugsy Malone and were participated in a televised choir performance for BBC’s Children in Need.

The Curriculum
Key Stage 3
At key Stage 3 students will perform, listen to and compose in a variety of styles. Students will also study the cultural and social context of the music. Practical music making is the key feature in key stage 3 and students benefit from the opportunity to compose and perform in ensembles.
Units covered;
Pitch and melody, Form and structure, The orchestra, Protest songs, Keyboard patterns, Vocal layers, Variations, Jazz and blues, African dance music/ STOMP, Film music.
Key Stage 3 Assessment
Music assessment makes judgements about students work and is the best means of monitoring student progress. It informs and develops students work and helps them to set targets. Assessment will help show students how to improve and achieve, it encourages and stimulates.
Key Stage 4
At ks4 music students will complete work towards BTEC Level 2 extended Certificate in music. When completed this is equivalent to 2 GSCE’s.
Work covered
- performance as a group and the rehearsal process involved with this.
- The music industry and employment opportunities within it.
- The planning and organisation of putting on a show.
Key Stage 4 Assessment
Throughout the course students will be required to complete both practical and written coursework. There is no exam involved with this course.
Key Stage 5
In the sixth form we offer our students BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in music. This is a two year course which is delivered at both Crawshaw and Pudsey Grangefield.

- Performing as a solo artist or in a band.
- Write songs and music.
- Learn how to use music technology.
- Study music promotion.
- Music theory.
Key Stage 5 assessment
Assessment is continuous throughout the two years and will be based on practical performance assignments as well as written research projects.
Progression Route
From BTEC
Most students will go on to study a BTEC National after their BTEC. This will give them more knowledge and experience for working or studying. However, if you decide to take a BTEC you don’t have to carry on taking BTEC’s – you can revert to A levels if you prefer.
From GCSE
Most students who study at this level can go on to A levels, at either school or college. This will prepare them for university, or they could go on to study a BTEC national diploma at college, equivalent to 2 A levels, again preparing for further education.
