Behaviour for Learning

Crawshaw employs a School Behaviour For Learning Policy.

What are the purposes of the policy?

  • To improve standards of behaviour in the learning environment.
  • To encourage students to take responsibility for their own actions.
  • To communicate to students what good behaviour means.
  • Use constant positive reinforcement in the pursuit of high standards of work and behaviour.
  • Provide a clear set of rewards and sanctions which all students, parents and staff understand.

Behaviour for Learning has three strands:

  • In the classroom
  • Around the school
  • Towards the individual

Rewards & Privileges

We operate a system of rewards and privileges to encourage students to behave well.  The rewards system is reviewed regularly to take into account students' opinions.  Some examples of rewards, for students who work hard, behave and attend well are as follows:

  • Positive points allocated
  • Verbal praise from staff
  • Achievement goals
  • Positive comments in the student planner / entered on the school system as points
  • Front of dinner queue passes
  • Positive letters / texts / postcards
  • Cinema afternoons
  • Rewards assemblies

Points

Students will automatically enter the school's reward programme by accumulating points.  All points will be recorded on the SIMS system.  Points may be given out by subject teachers for things like:

  • good independent work in class or at home,
  • meeting coursework deadlines,
  • good effort / contribution in lessons,
  • good presentation,
  • contribution to whole school events,
  • extra curricular activities,
  • representing Crawshaw School in a positive light,
  • Tutors may also give out points for things like good work as a form representative, being on time, having equipment and correct uniform.

Behaviour for Learning in the classrooom

Behaviour for Learning is a whole school approach which encourages a common system for applying consequences for behaviour which disrupts teaching and learning.  Students will be made aware of the consequnces of poor behaviour and be given opportunities to modify their behaviour with the support and guidance of staff.  To support stuudents these targets are displayed in all classroooms and it is against these that consequences are applied.

Behaviour For Learning Targets

In addition to the behaviour targets, meeting the expectations below will help to achieve success in learning:

  • Arrive on time in school and lessons in correct uniform and with a good attitude towards learning.
  • Ensure you have all equipment and clothing required for every lesson (i.e. stationery, calculator, subject books and equipment, PE Kit etc.)
  • Complete independent learning tasks on time.
  • Make use of the support offered by the school: LRC, revision classes, coursework sessions, extra curricular activities.

Sanctions Structure

The sanctions will only be applied if students fail to meet behaviour targets and do not respond to staff attempts to modify behaviour.

1st misbehaviour

C1

Verbal -1 point

2nd misbehaviour

C2

Verbal warning and movement in the classrooms if necessary -2 points

3rd misbehaviour

C3

Detention for 30 minutes after school -3 points

4th misbehaviour

C4

Students may be removed within the department by the teacher or On-Call requested.  On-Call to speak to the member of staff about behaviour of the student.  Detention for 1 hour.

Enquiries regarding C3 and C4

Initially students must be encouraged to take responsibility for seeing the appropriate Behaviour Support Worker / Manager, Director of Learning or Subject Leader by the end of the school day if they have any queries about the consequence that they have been issued with.  Students will be told this and also warned that once issued, C3s cannot be withdrawn, so arguing with a teacher may put them at risk of receiving a C4.

Should an enquiry from a parent / carer be raised they should contact the appropriate Year administrator who will direct queries to the relevant member of staff.  In most cases this will not be the classroom teacher.
