English
Here at Crawshaw, the English Department hope to foster in students a love of both spoken and written language that will extend imaginations and empower our young people in the wider world beyond school – whether to succeed academically, in further or higher education, in the world of work, or in our increasingly media-orientated society.

The Curriculum
Key Stage 3
APP (Assessing Pupil Progress) tasks cover students’ achievement and attainment in 3 areas: speaking and listening; reading; and writing. Levels are awarded in different tasks for specific assessment focus, building up a trackable profile of student performance across the key stage and leading to a final level at the end of Yr.9
Key Stage 4
GCSE courses begin in Yr.10 with all students studying English Language. This consists of a series of Controlled Assessments, plus a traditional exam. In Yr.11 students either follow the English Literature pathway, to achieve a second GCSE award, or follow the single GCSE English pathway, depending upon results in English Language and through. In Year 11, students get the opportunity to be involved in Poetry Live; a trip to hear readings, discussions and analyses of GCSE poetry texts by the authors themselves, plus advice from the Chief Examiner: the perfect opportunity to ask questions, focus revision and get the word from the horse’s (or poet’s!) mouth.
Key Stage 5
English Language and Literature GCE covers 2 modules for AS (Yr.12) and 2 modules for A2 (Yr.13). In each year, one module is assessed by examination (60%) and the other through coursework (40%): in both cases, the coursework modules combine a creative task and an analytical task. This combination of creative/analytical and examination/coursework, just like the combination of linguistic and literary skills, is well suited to a wide range of students, making the course accessible for and appealing to students with a genuine spectrum of interests and strengths.
